site updates

May 29th, 2005
First, the News and Shows pages are being combined. You may have noticed that the menu to the left no longer has a separate link for Shows and when you move the mouse over the News link, it changes to Shows. That will change back when I do a more formal link to the old Shows pages. For now, here is a link to the old Shows page. There is another temporary link at the top of the News page.

Also, the Welcome page can now be accessed by clicking the morphing logo in the top corner and the separate link will be removed shortly. And lastly, the Links, Site Update and Site Map pages will soon be accessed through a footer at the bottom of each page.

I goofed. After moving the site away from GeoCities, I neglected to update the e-mail form. As a result, messages were being diverted to limbo@nowhere.void.

But rest assured my duff has been gotten off of and all is well. In fact, it's better. Instead of that generic message that GeoCities left you with, now there's a page set up by me.

To those who did send a message, it's a good idea to resend it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Getting the host changed was the most annoying experience.

Network Solutions, the company that manages the kmb domain, sent the confirmation request for the host change to an e-mail address that I haven't had for over a year. And to update my e-mail, I had to fax them proof of who I was and my authority, blah, blah, blah.

It took several tries to get it done. Their two week processing period, coupled with a lack of diligence on my part stretched those fax attempts out far too long.

But, less than one week after they updated my e-mail address, the URL is reborn. The next change will not be so painful.

Galleries, galleries, galleries. Three have been updated, while two are brand new. First, the galleries for Kevin, Eric and Tom have been updated with some new pics. Also, the gallery for the TT's show has been uploaded. And there is a new gallery just for band pics.

Welcome to version 1.1 of the KMB website. It's finally here. Yeah! I've been promising this update since November. I hope you're not disappointed. Please, tell me what you think. I gotta know. Use either the revamped contact form or e-mail me at site_update@kevinmacdonaldband.com.

It's getting late so I'm going to buzz through what's gone, what's changed, what's new, what doesn't work, what couldn't be completed in time and what I'm planning.

  1. The are a couple things missing. Chief among them are four of the song samples from the CD section. These were pulled simply to make room for the new samples from the demo.
Also, the jokes from the bios only work if you have a JavaScript enabled browser. I am a big believer is backwards browser compatibility and the fact that I couldn't get that to work annoys me. I decided to go ahead with it because it was either lock it out from a minority who don't have JavaScript or temporarily disable it for everyone. I will be working on it and will restore the feature as soon as I can.

  2. Lots of stuff has changed. The main frameset has been rearranged. As I've said before, this was the first site that I designed and I made a truck load of mistakes. The screen resolution that I design at is larger than what many use to surf the web. I was more aware of that this time. That is the main reason that the top frame was gotten rid of, to give more viewing space. The navigation bar at the bottom of the page takes up only 25 pixels.
And when I got rid of the top frame, I needed to relocate the jokes and song samples. I decided to open up new windows for a couple reasons. The jokes I think are just cool the way they pop up and go away on their own. But the song samples needed a separate window because some versions of Netscape Navigator load the song sample within that same window that launched the file. If there was no separate window, the media player would replace the page and the song would stop playing if you clicked on anything else.
The contact page is one of my favorites. I think it looks beautiful. The two forms for the mailing list and "say hi" were silly. I will soon be adding JavaScript pre-verification to the form to make my processing of it easier.
The picture galleries are in a new format. New bio page pics for the guys. The shows and news pages will now be split up by year. And a few other changes here and there, but nothing else major.

  3. There are some new things as well. As I mentioned in the news page, the demo CD has been added along with song samples from the new tunes. All the lyrics from the first two CDs are here now and there is a whole links page so you can visit some of the people who have been cool to the guys.

  4. Some things don't work for some people. There are two things that simply don't work at the moment. Most of the footer links on every page are broken. I didn't fix these because the process was too long and tedious considering I am going to try a new technique soon which will make my life much easier. Also, you can probably tell that I am new to JavaScript. All I have to say is that Netscape 2 users (and there are some still out there) must hate me. One important piece of code that I wrote and included on most every page breaks in Netscape 2 and flashes an annoying message saying so. Again, all I can say is that this will be fixed soon.

  5. I couldn't finish everything I wanted to. I wanted to put up a page of the people who've been coming to every show and a page of the different musicians who've helped out. And there was a page to explain some of the site's navigation as well.
I also wanted to play a nifty navigation trick with the frames which is too difficult for my sleep deprived brain to explain at the moment. Suffice to say, it was a cool way to enhance location recognition within the web site. Another separate frames issue is necessary to correct one my earliest blunders of not setting up all the folders that I now need.

  6. I already have new ideas for the next major revision which I'm planning for the summer sometime.

That's it for now. Again, I'm very tired. I'm surprised I can still type. I'll worry about the typos tomorrow.

Until later,       Bill
